Advanced image quality
This compact, lightweight, constant full-frame F4 wide-angle zoom lens delivers superb G-lens image quality. It features two AA (Advanced Aspherical) elements, one Super ED (Extra-low Dispersion) element, and one ED element to effectively suppress distortion and aberration.

Smooth power zoom with fast response
A new power zoom system driven for the first time by four XD (Extreme Dynamic) linear motors in an Alpha lens offers smooth control thanks to the immediacy of manual zooming. Even subtle rotation of the zoom ring is accurately detected and instantly converted into zoom operation. A continuously variable zoom lever facilitates super-slow constant-speed zooms, and zooming can be controlled remotely even when the camera is mounted on a gimbal.

Designed for refined cinematic images
In addition to the smooth and versatile power zoom, this remarkably compact lens minimizes angle-of-view shifts that can occur during focusing and axial shifts during zooming so that stable, high-quality movie footage can be easily captured. Focusing, zooming, and aperture operation are also extremely quiet, greatly reducing noise and vibration that can interfere with movie recording.

XD Linear Motors deliver stunning AF performance
Two XD (Extreme Dynamic) linear motors deliver high thrust for fast, quiet, and low-vibration autofocus while maintaining compact lens dimensions. Tenacious and reliable autofocus can smoothly track subjects while shooting stills or high-frame-rate movies. With a compatible camera, precise focus can be maintained while shooting continuous photos at up to 30 frames per second and movies at up to 120 frames per second. Subjects are smoothly tracked even when zooming.

Naturally rendered bokeh and excellent close-up performance
A 7-blade circular aperture and well-controlled spherical aberration deliver smooth, natural bokeh. A minimum focusing distance of just 9.5 inches (0.24 m) with a maximum magnification of 0.23 times and constant length make this lens an excellent choice for close-up photography.
