61MP Exmor R CMOS sensor and BIONZ XR processor

The Sony a7CR's advanced imaging system is powered by a 61-megapixel full-frame Exmor R CMOS sensor and the BIONZ XR processor, a powerful combination of incredible resolution with high clarity, low noise, and a wide dynamic range of 15 stops. In terms of shooting speeds, the sensor and processor enable shooting up to 8 frames per second with the mechanical shutter and 7 frames per second with the electronic shutter at full resolution with full-time AF/AE. If recording only JPEG images, more than 1,000 frames can be recorded in a single burst. The sensor structure promotes impressive image quality, and a copper wiring layer significantly improves data transmission speed to create 61-megapixel, 14-bit, high-resolution still images with a native sensitivity range of ISO 100-32,000, which can be expanded to ISO 50-102,400.

Improved processing engine

A new BIONZ XR processing engine delivers up to 8x higher processing performance than previous generations, enabling faster overall performance, impressive image quality with high sensitivity and dynamic ranges, and smoother processing capable of handling a host of AI tasks and intelligent AF alongside imaging processes. This processing system also reduces rolling shutter and other motion distortions for clean rendering of moving subjects.

Pixel Shift Multi Shooting

This unique composition mode allows you to achieve even higher resolution than that offered by the 61MP sensor. Working in conjunction with sensor-shift image stabilization, this mode moves the sensor while making 16 consecutive exposures to acquire approximately 240.8 megapixels of information for greater color accuracy and detail than possible with a single exposure, as well as an impressive image size of 19,008 x 12,672 pixels. These files can then be merged during post-production using the Sony Imaging Software Suite.

Accurate exposure and color

The a7CR uses AI-powered algorithms such as Human Pose Estimation to detect skin areas to more accurately balance exposures when shooting portraits. This AE method is approximately 20 % more reliable, even in backlit or direct sunlight situations, or even when the subject is not directly facing the camera. Deep learning technology, along with external visible light and IR sensors, also contribute to more accurate color reproduction and automatic white balance processing.

Image stabilization

Now offering seven stops of shake compensation, the camera's 5-axis pixel-level optical image stabilization system, which counteracts five different types of camera shake encountered when shooting handheld photos and videos, is algorithmically optimized for precision detection and control down to a single pixel. The AI processing unit also improves communication between the body and lens, providing steadier framing before shooting. This allows users to confidently use any lens, even adapted lenses, for critical imaging without encountering blur from camera shake.
Next-generation AI-based autofocus

AI Processing Unit

Thanks to dedicated processing, the a7RC's autofocus benefits greatly from smarter subject tracking and recognition capabilities, as well as the reliable Hybrid AF system Alpha cameras are known for. Real-time AF works with seven different selectable target types:

  • Human, which tracks body and head positions for accurate portraits. Real-time Eye AF performance has also been improved by 60 % thanks to human pose estimation capabilities.
  • Animal, Bird, and Animal/Bird modes are now 40 % more accurate for tracking and recognizing a variety of animal types. Recognition of these subjects includes dogs, cats, birds, and more, with the ability to focus on eyes and recognize animal bodies and heads.
  • Insect recognition offers even finer performance with the ability to detect the head or the entire insect.
  • Car/train and airplane recognition means the camera can detect the front part of a train, the nose of an airplane, or easily detect the entire fast-moving subject.
  • Real-time tracking uses AI-powered subject recognition to track moving subjects, making it especially suitable for sports and action subjects. Additionally, human pose estimation allows the camera to distinguish between multiple people and stay focused on the target subject; even if someone crosses the front, the camera maintains focus on the key person.
Advanced Fast Hybrid AF
  • Covering 79 % of the full-frame image area, or 100 % of the APS-C cropped area, a Fast Hybrid AF system incorporates a dense grid of 693 phase-detection points for fast and accurate focusing in a variety of lighting conditions with sensitivity down to -4 EV. This focusing system is available for use in all recording modes, benefiting both video and stills applications.
  • Full-time DMF (Direct Manual Focus) allows the lens's focus ring to be used for manual focus control at any time, making it easy to switch focus to a different subject, even when working with AF.
  • For moving photographic subjects, this AF system tracks the best 10 continuous shooting speeds per second, providing full-time AF tracking between each consecutive frame.
  • In-camera focusing is possible, with the ability to record up to 299 frames with sequentially shifted focus points to create composite images during post-production with greater depth of field than possible.
AF during video recording
  • Real-time eye IF is fully supported during video recording, for detecting and tracking the eyes of humans, animals and birds while shooting.
  • Focus Map is a unique way to visualize depth of field and works in a similar way to peaking with a colored overlay of the scene that indicates which parts of the scene are in front of and behind the point of focus based on the chosen aperture.
  • A feature carried over from the FX6 digital camera, AF Assist lets you intuitively switch to manual focus control to adjust focus position when working with AF. It's a quick way to shift selective focus between various subjects in a scene while recording.
  • A unique solution to compensate for the performance of certain lenses when focusing, Focus Breathing Compensation will automatically smooth focus transitions and maintain a consistent field of view when changing focus position during a shot. This mode slightly crops into the image and corrects for any compositional changes detected during focusing.

Video recording

  • Record full-frame, 60 frames per second video in 10-bit 4:2:2 using the advanced XAVC SI format for consistent performance and quality at bitrates up to 600 Mbps, and, if recording externally via the full-size HDMI port, the 16-bit raw output can be used for even greater tonal reproduction and post-production flexibility.
  • If using Super 35 cropping, full pixel playback recording is possible up to UHD 4K at frame rates up to 30p or 6.2K. Oversampling can be used for greater sharpness and detail.
  • Raw output is supported up to 4K 60p and simultaneous internal 4K recording is also possible.
  • While recording in Full HD, high-speed recording and 120 frames per second allows for recording of 4x and 5x slow motion movies with playback frame rate set to 30p or 24p.
  • S-Log3 and S-Gamut3 Cine Gamma curves enable over 15 stops of dynamic range and increased post-production flexibility, including video matching from other Sony Cinema Line cameras.
  • S-Cinetone can be used to provide distinct colors and a healthy-looking complexion based on the technology of professional Cinema Line cameras, such as the VENICE. This color profile offers natural midtones, soft colors, and, above all, well-controlled highlights.
  • Creative looks can be integrated into recorded footage to create a specific mood while recording and minimize the need for editing.
  • User-created LUTs and presets can be configured to precisely monitor footage or preview a specific look while shooting and can be applied to the camera monitor, EVF, or HDMI output.

Case design and connectivity

  • The introduction of a front control dial puts an extra level of control and speed at the tip of your index finger and ensures you won't be all thumbs when it comes to peak action.
  • Use the camera's USB output function with UVC/UAC control via a computer for streaming applications and broadcasts.
  • Built-in 802.11a/b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi enables communication on both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands to instantly share images on mobile devices for direct online sharing on social networks, email and cloud storage sites.
